The chairman of Cross River State Local Government Service Commission, Prince Nja Nkang Abang has confirmed that in eight months N9,582,961.60 has been recovered following introduction of Information Communication Technology.
The government scribe made the disclosure in Calabar while addressing journalists on the achievements and challenges of the commission in the last one year.
According to him, the introduction of ICT has helped to stop infiltration of swindlers who compounded problems of pension payment in the state.
He said the commission has since commenced online computation of all terminal benefits of pensioners and other staff thereby weeding out ghost names and swindlers.
“The Local Government Pensions Board has adopted e-payment for pensions and gratuities direct to the4,190 pensioners’ personal accounts. This method has reduced the incidence of swindlers who had infiltrated the board before now”, he said.
On seeing the benefits accruable from application of ICT, he said that the commission has become
committed to sponsoring its staff for more workshops. 59 management staff were sent to ASCON, and 38 to University of Nigeria Nsukka.
Meanwhile, Governor Liyel Imoke has said that the state will begin to pay the fully harmonised pension by January 2013 having received a report from the accountant general of the state. He said he will require over N1billion annually to be able to pay.
