Efik Lingua Rap is the specialty; Upper X is the street name, real names
Idongesit Ekpenyong, leading the OKPO REKORDS crew. After a smashing hit single
on Dagrin’s Pon Pon instrumental, he captured the minds of anyone who
understands what he is saying. But of course, Hip-Hop is not just limited to
music, the OKPO REKORDS crew also comprises of talents like Kourage,
Space, M-Honeyz, Texzy, Waley, Dr. Ritzy and sensational singer K-boy
using their creativity to represent hip hop to the understanding of those who do
or do not speak the Efik language.
The world is yet to feel the stock
that this talent group is made up of. Calabar as a city, Cross River as a
state, and the Efik-Ibibio speaking community as a whole have had a taste of
them, but I can assure you that they haven’t seen anything yet. For now, music
is the bond sustaining the union of the brothers from different mothers and
backgrounds, as such, they have decided to come up with a mix tape, which will
be a compilation of their cover freestyles, and some hit singles that have
already made waves in the South.
Individually, these hip hop heads are
nursing a solo career and all plan to launch their albums one after the other,
starting with Upper X, whose fame and popularity has grown beyond the shores of
Calabar, even to the admiration of super rapper- Mode 9. According to Upper X,
the crew was formerly known by the name ICE MUSIC, OKPO REKORDS birthed on the
exit of DJ Minaj who had to pursue a solo career as a disc jockey.
Dallas-Dreaded Space-the manager, spoke
extempore on behalf of the group, asides music, we have other talents that
helps us to survive and raise funds to pursue the music dream, I am the
manager, and I am in a hot romance with the camera, so I can shoot
advertisement commercials and music videos, we have a member of the group who
does catering, decoration and what have you.
Watch Out for the OKPO REKORDS-Made In
Calabar Mix-Tape coming before you say Jack Robinson.
In the mean time, ‘yak ika usughode’.
