The Cross River Police Command, on Monday, in Calabar confirmed the death of nine persons in a fatal accident along the Calabar-Ikom federal highway.
Mr Festus Ndimele, the Public Relations Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in the state, however could not immediately confirm the accident.
Eye witness accounts had it that the accident was caused by a head-on collision between a truck and a blue taxi cab.
According to the accounts, the two vehicles were travelling from opposite directions, with the truck coming from Calabar. They said the taxi cab, which had 11 passengers on board, was coming from the Ogoja - Ikom axis.
Three of the passengers had survived on the spot of the accident, only to later die while being conveyed to the general hospital at Ugep.
Eye witnesses said that the truck’s driver had attempted to avoid some potholes when his vehicle veered off its lane and collided with the taxi cab which was on the other lane.
